I could have swore blind that you already had JEG's recordings of the Passions and Mass.Jared wrote:

I do. Follow my thinking for a moment. That is a limited edition 22CD box set which is now out of print and going for over £100 on Amazon, if you can now find one. Mine was a fraction of that second hand (?!) on ebay. This set includes all his first (admittedly incomplete) traversal of Cantatas, which if I'd had collected separately would now cost me a small fortune. If I put the Passion CDs on ebay in the New Year along with a couple of Cantata disks, I *should* recoup approx 2/3 of the cost of this set back, gaining about 10/11 new CDs of Canatas in the process, which will cost considerably less than £2 a disk and also take up less shelf space.bombasticDarren wrote:I could have swore blind that you already had JEG's recordings of the Passions and Mass.Jared wrote:

I admire the amount of thought you have put into the purchase Jared. I'll leave it at that.Jared wrote:I do. Follow my thinking for a moment. Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
phew... I'm relieved about that, because in the New Year, I'm likely to try something similar with the Angela Hewitt complete Bach piano works. If I play my cards right and wait for the price to dip sufficiently, I should gain about 7 disks of great new music for around a tenner...bombasticDarren wrote:I admire the amount of thought you have put into the purchase Jared. Yep, I think you are nuts....but not for buying the Gardiner box set (shrewd move)....I just think you are nutsJared wrote: Do you like my thinking, or do you think I'm nuts?
Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
This was the first disc of Charpentier’s music that I bought and it still remains a seasonal favourite; with gorgeous singing and beautiful instrumental textures. The Noels are very melodious and lilt along at a lively pace, in a dance like fashion; a lovely recording.

He came to conduct our National Symphony in 1977 or 78. My brother was second conductor of the orchestra at the time. And immediately after his last concert he had to take a flight to Germany.
Well, the driver that was supposed to take him to the airport never showed up, so my brother asked me to take him to the airport because he had an afternoon rehearsal. And so there goes little Pepe (I was 17) with the then little known Skrowaczewski to the airport. I remember him as a very nice man. I honestly don´t remember much about what we talked about but there was definitely some Mahler, since he came to conduct Mahler´s Seventh in a complete Mahler cycle that also included Eduardo Mata, chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional at the time, Erich Leinsdorf, Maurice Abravanel and another little known conductor that was to become in the next decade a celebrity: Klaus Tennstedt.

I hope you like that Darren, Sawallisch's cycle on EMI put me off Brahms for years and it was Jared and Pepe who encouraged me to try Harnoncourt et al and I haven't looked back since.bombasticDarren wrote:
Enjoy.

No, I agree about the Sawallisch EMI set. I couldn't get on with it at all, but I heard good things about the ridiculousy cheap Philips cycle so though I would try it out. I have to say I have never truly taken to Harnoncourt's Brahms, even though I remain a critical fan of many of his recordingsSeán wrote:I hope you like that Darren, Sawallisch's cycle on EMI put me off Brahms for years and it was Jared and Pepe who encouraged me to try Harnoncourt et al and I haven't looked back since.

Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
For a Brahms cycle with a modern medium size orchestra this should also be considered, it´s very well conducted and magnificently played. In fact the COE orchestral performance surpasses Mackerras´Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Though lately the Brahms I have been enjoying the most is with sumptuous symphony orchestras, namely 2 utterly extraordinary live Fourths, one with Giulini and the Concertgebouw part of Box 5 of the Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw years 1980-1990 and a recently released white hot Günter Wand/Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in the Profil label that should be investigated.

Strict discipline is what is called for gentlemen
I only now have 9 individual CDs and 1 set unlistened to on my shelf
However, I ordered 6 CDs yesterday and will probably go again today

I thought you would have these already Chalk - good to hear you enjoy them as well. I like the way the Brandenburgs and overtures are split up throughout the discs.Chalkperson wrote:That's a great set, I have all the individual discs, each one a winner...arthound wrote:Finally arrived around a week ago - it's a superb set and well priced at the moment through some online outlets.Seán wrote:I, too, am curious aboit that set, I had it in my jpc basket and let it go.arthound wrote:Hope you continue getting better Darren.
