Symphony no. 2 'Copernican' Op. 31 by Henryk Gorecki conducted by Antoni Wit/ Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra/ ... / Naxos

Not as famous as his 3rd but quite wonderful indeed.

Symphony no. 2 and Overture Julius Ceasar by Robert Schumann conducted by Georg Solti/ VSO/Decca

Big fan of Schumann's symphony but I never felt the urge to buy another set since that one has everything i like in a performance. Amazing conducting, big and loud brass section and top quality musicians.

Am I the only one here who really really like the overture Julius Ceasar? The main melody is amazing and very clever.

My Vlast by Bedrich Smetana Antoni Wit/Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra/Naxos

You know the feeling you get when you listen to a cd that you haven't listen to in years and then after a few minutes you realize how great that piece is? Well that is what I felt after listening to that cd. Love everything that I have ever heard from Smetana.

A fascinating cantata from the guy who was preferred in Dresden over J.S. Bach.
Bach obviously is in a different class, but it´s not difficult to see why Hasse was so highly regarded in his time, his music is very appealing.

Rafael Kubelik owned that score when he was alive, and his many recordings show his deep affinity for this nationalistic score. His two late stereo recordings on Orfeo with IIRC the Bavarians, and live with the Czech Philharmonic from a concert celebrating Czechoslovakia's release from communist rule are treasures that should be in every collection.

Just comparing this version to the recent PBS telecast of Netrebko et al: IMHO Netrebko wins hands down, especially now that she has discovered a stunningly beautiful watery trill in the middle of her voice, that made her shine in "Al dolce guidami.....".

Thanks for the suggestion though. No doubt that they must be awesome recordings. I think that it was even the 1990 recording is in the top 50 recordings to own by the bbc magazine.

Kubelik's 1989 recording with the CPO on Supraphon and the Talich 1954 with the CPO recordng on Naxos are truly magnificent and essential recordings if you love Má Vlast.

To be fair to JS, that Anna Bolena recording was made when she was 62 years old. Sutherland added Bolena to her repertoire quite late in her career (early '80s), unfortunately we don't have an account of this opera by her when she was in her prime.

I think Sutherland and Bonynge were misguided with this Anna Bolena and the contemporaneous Rodelinda. They add next to nothing to Sutherland´s prestige and even less to the discography. On the other hand I kind of admire the Adriana Lecouvreur with Bergonzi, her farewell complete opera recording. First of all because it´s a sort of valedictory recording for La Stupenda. I can´t think of a role less suited to her than Adriana, a role for a great singing actress that needs to be ENUNCIATED, and to be fair Sutherland is not that bad. But when one remembers the brilliant bel canto soprano that she was in the 60`s and 70`s, the Bolena is almost an embarrassment to her own standards.
