Re: What are YOU listening to today?
Sandrine Piau like Veronique Gens started as a Les Arts Florissants girl, carefully nurtured and coached by William Christie. And now she is a delightful, gorgeous lyric soprano at the top of her game.
This well planed recital covers over a 100 years of French operatic arias, from late XVII Century Marc Antoine Charpentier and Rebel to late XVIII Century Gretry and Sacchini.
Piau is by turns, brilliant. touching and sexy. She enjoys excellent support from Jerome Correas and Les Paladins. A recital to treasure.

Back to basics.
Mozart, String Quintet in C, KV515.
Refreshing after listening to too much "off the beaten trail" music.

Kurt Masur must be unique in having recorded the War Requiem 3 times, with the New York, Israel and London Philharmonics.
Though very different from Britten´s own recording, I´m fond of this live Royal Albert Hall recording. The soloists are excellent.

Disc 32: Violin Sonatas Nos. 8-10 - Grumiaux, Haskil
It's not too often that I take this box for a spin, although it abounds in treasures such as these two for the violin sonatas, and Gulda being the soloist for the piano sonatas and the piano concertos (there with Horst Stein conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker).

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
I've been enjoying this set very much over the past two weeks. Mr. Crossley's tone is exceptionally beautiful and he can be both expressive and rhythmically firm. The Etudes, however, remain a tough group of works for me.
A very nice complement to the recent EMI set of Albert Ferber.

This delightful disc of music by Francaix by the Gaudier Ensemble:
The first piece in the collection, "A huit," which has the same instrumentation as Schubert's Octet, is particularly charming.

Yes, I have that one, nut-job. But I first fell in love with the Serenade through an Epic LP with the conductor Louis Lane and the Cleveland Sinfonietta when I was just a teenager. A recording called "Romances and Serenades" that I still proudly own.nut-job wrote:Is that the "serenade" on this release?johnQpublic wrote:I don't have that one, nut-job, but if you don't have his "Serenade" (for small orchestra) please try to hear it. Re: What are YOU listening to today?
What a luxury is to have 2 such fine recordings of Palestrina as this one and the classic Kubelik in DG.
If forced to choose I would still opt for the Kubelik because, really, it´s impossible to surpass.
But this Berlin recording ably conducted by Otmar Suitner is very satisfactory too. I really love the opera and have both, and Jonas Kaufmann has expressed interest in the title role, so there´s hope for a new one.

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
This live 1999 recording of La Damnation de Faust was issued in protest for the Dutch government reduction of subsidies to the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Haitink is more lively and dramatic than in his latest studio recordings. The singers are outstanding and the sound is state-of-the-art.
Re: What are YOU listening to today?
These 1973/5 recordings find Victoria De Los Angeles near the end of her career and while idiomatic, her voice is not quite fresh enough in occasional spots. I still love this disc for her outstanding personality, which shines through along with her impeccable musicianship. One of my favorite singers......

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
I never do "comparisons" but sometimes it is fun to listen to a piece in two wildly different interpretations.
First I listened to Bach's first Viola da gamba sonata by Harnoncourt and Tachezi. Then the same piece by Maisky and Argerich ('transcribed' for cello and piano). Both were superb. I find Bach's music unique in its ability to survive adaption to different instrumental ensembles.
