RIP Gordon Willis

Here's the place to talk about DVDs (or VHS) films and movies you have seen on television and recommend or don't recommend. Discuss actors and scores, too.

RIP Gordon Willis

Post by Tarantella » Mon May 19, 2014 2:12 am

The American cinematographer Gordon Willis, known as the "Prince of Darkness", has died. My favourite film of his - in fact, one of my all-time favourite films - was "All the President's Men". A fabulous film, particularly the end shot of the teleprinter itemizing the events leading to the destruction of the Nixon Presidency, with guns from the inauguration sounding, and which ends on a freeze frame. The previous shot reveals the presidential inauguration taking place on a TV screen inside the offices of "The Washington Post"; in the foreground the journalists are hard at work on their typewriters. This end scene is a powerful example of the effect of sound in film used to create tension and heighten dramatic irony.
