Got an email from Bard today--I'm disappointed but we'll be there this Sunday. You can here his justification here. He mentions Putin and Trump but does leave Aleppo out of it unlike the Glimmerglass production of Donizetti's Siege of Calais. Regards, Len

Len knows that I originally thought of attending this myself, but the after-church rush to get there on time discouraged me. Then I discovered that my friend Ted, whom Len and some others met in NYC last year, is also attending the same performance as part of his annual summer opera odyssey, which takes him even farther afield than Len. Incentive to change my mind, you would think, but he had made arrangements to have dinner with a cousin, so I would at best have been able to say "Hi how are you." Instead, we are having dinner on Saturday near the Albany airport where we can actually talk. Ted was my best friend in college, the kind who knows things about me that no one else knows, and it had been 15 years since I had seen him when we saw Elektra together. Now, two years in a row. Sorry, that was sentimental and not very much about classical music, and I do hope that Len and Sue enjoy the performance no matter what the production may be like.

I suppose this isn't going to be the worst kind of directorial meddling, as the two periods of Russian history, past and present are not totally unrelated , such as you find in so many updated productions .
Back in the 90s there was a production of Boris Godunov conducted by Abbado set in the present day . Abbado and the cast made an excellent studio recording for Sony Classical, but I don't think there is a DVD of the live production
