ISIS attacks NYC, nobody at CMG bats an eyelid
Very sad!
He said in a Trump like manner...
on wednesday an (alleged) Jihadist allied to ISIS from the Former Soviet Union, in fact from a difficult to spell country not under scrutiny by the present Administration, killed half a dozen people, injured a bunch of others, on the West Side Highway in New York City.
Thats four blocks from where I live, as is the WTC where those with a long memory may remember was attacked twice by Al Qaeda.
But, nobody here posts a damn thing, just like you all never reported on the atrocities in Syria a few years ago.
This was on American soil. Trump called for the Death Penalty via Twitter.
Are the members all stuck with their heads in the sand?
Did nobody consider how well planned the attack was?
Does nobody have a word to say about it?
My friend's kid goes to school right there, she was locked down, her father was beyond distraught.
I fought so many battles on behalf of this site, all those Right Wingers are gone because I cared enough to ban them.
Do you guys even care about the first Vehicuar Terrorist Attack (not counting Charlottesville) by an actual ISIS affiliated Terrorist?
The cop who shot him aimed low, we have this bastard in custody, yet nothing on CMG, not one word.
If I had any influence here I would shut the Pub in disgust, citing all you lot as uncaring, pathetic individuals.
He came from New Jersey, the dreaded RWetmore was from that State, Lenny lives there, but nothing, not a peep from you whining liberals.
I got rid of Randall on a technicality after being urged to do so by the members.
I regret silencing him, why, because you lot have zero gratitude, zero concern, zero reason to post.
How sad is that!

Re: ISIS attacks NYC, nobody at CMG bats an eyelid
It is good to hear from you here again, Chalkie. We get a lot of posts about how awful it is from members like jserraglio. I have generally stopped posting that way or commenting because the situation under the current administration is too awful to spend much time contemplating, unless I want to go out of my mind. I realize that this is only tangentially related to what happened in Manhattan, but don't think for a minute that no one here cares because there has been no thread on it. If I have a comment to make in addition to what I have posted on Facebook, it is that, aside from the human loss, most of those people were tourists. Between that and Trump's xenophobia, NYC will once again experience a drop in visitors, or other input from abroad, which is necessary to its health as a great city.
There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Chalkie good to hear from you-Sue and I have been spending so much time down there on our trips into NYC recently-we have been watching so much news on all this and care greatly about what happened. BTW at the old World Trade Center Sue and I celebrated 3 anniversaries there over the years-June 30-Windows on the World. That area down there means a tremendous amount to us. We were in tears when if fell. Just 3 weeks ago we were down at Battery Park and South St. Seaport-even Dumbo-we love it! This pompous, hectoring statement is characteristic of the self-aggrandizing puffery sometimes found nowadays on CMG in its sad decline. What I feel about the recent attack on a city I love, where I once lived, will not be shared publicly.Chalkperson wrote: ↑Fri Nov 03, 2017 5:10 pm[snip] nobody here posts a damn thing, just like you all never reported on the atrocities in Syria a few years ago....you lot have zero gratitude, zero concern, zero reason to post. Your point? Nothing in your post makes sense. You seem to be threatening to expel us all for what we don't say. That's just nonsense.
I live here but have no comment, nor has it been a topic of conversation at the library where I work. A terrorist attack in NYC is hardly something new or even very surprising, and there's really nothing to say other than "Ain't it awful," which goes without saying. It seems we New Yorkers are made of sterner stuff. If you choose to take offense, that's your problem.

Re: ISIS attacks NYC, nobody at CMG bats an eyelid
My point, Lenny posts tourist snaps after being afraid to walk the high line.
The radicalization process is the scariest factor in terrorism.
That stretch of the WSH is perfect for this attack, I drove by last night and they were putting the concrete blocks in place.
My real point, as shown in the replies is that you guys accept murder as a daily occurrence, did anybody post in Las Vegas?
The white supremacists have numbed your senses, ISIS is an ideology that now infects the US.
If YIU inflict your rule on other nations, it will come back to bite you, again and again.

Perhaps most especially in the age of Trump would one think to persuade by adopting an accusatory tone. Trump's pernicious influence on our political discourse is pandemic. AG Sessions is attacked yesterday for investigations he does not initiate; so too we of countenancing murder based on statements we do not make.Chalkperson wrote:My real point, as shown in the replies is that you guys accept murder as a daily occurrence, did anybody post in Las Vegas? Chalkie I don't understand why you're saying these bad things are stuff I'm not concerned about-I've been watching so much political stuff on TV of late I don't have time to conduct regular household items. Just yesterday a terrific Frontline called Putin's Revenge-imo a super report on the damage Russian interference has had on our election--anyway I don't know how you can say I'm afraid of walking on the High Line-on nearly every trip into NYC I'm on it and have mentioned it frequently in this forum. Trumpism triumphant. Nowadays a hodgepodge of insults, accusations and ad hominem attacks, such as what has been posted twice in this thread, is served up as rational political discourse.

OK let's lighten this up a bit. At Academic Bowl, we always go over the questions in a group, because I do make mistakes. One of the coaches had pics of his kids and said they were dressed as trolls for Halloween. I said, "Were they Russian trolls?" which got a huge laugh.

I apologize for being so humorless, but I cannot and will not take lightly being accused of countenancing murder. My reaction to the attack in NYC Is none of anybody else's business; furthermore, I resent being lumped together with ISIS fellow travelers simply because I choose to keep my feelings private. A line has been crossed here that should never have been even toed up to.

He seems to think he is privy to our minds and hearts. My own mind-reading powers being nonexistent, please forgive me if I take him at his word and take offense at and exception to what he plainly and repeatedly stated. How dare he associate me and others here with White Supremacists. Shameless!
My thoughts on NYC, the city of my deepest longings and loves, are unfathomable, but on this issue, the issue of whether a self-appointed arbiter has the moral standing to sit in judgment upon the rest of us, I will not be silent.

Anybody here can express his feelings, private or public, but badmouthing the members openly in this forum is not allowed. That's troll behavior, and quite a few have been locked out of CMG because of it. A word to the wise.

My view, right or wrong, is that blanket accusations of the sort leveled here once and then compounded a second time ["you guys accept murder as a daily occurrence/The white supremacists have numbed your senses"] are beyond the pale and indefensible. Other than objecting to those repeated remarks in the strongest possible terms, I'm not looking to engage with anybody on a personal level, least of all with perfect strangers.

Re: ISIS attacks NYC, nobody at CMG bats an eyelid
I believe the expectation after such a tragedy is to start arguing about Islam as a religion of peace. Well, if you want to do that, look no further than Yahoo Message boards.
Re: ISIS attacks NYC, nobody at CMG bats an eyelid
Obviously a terrible event. But why should we respond to IS attacks in New York more than in Paris, Berlin, London, Kabul or Baghdad? And why is it worse than one deranged person shooting several hundred people in Las Vegas? There seems one essential feature here: New York is where Chalkie lives. In other words, a case of parochialism.

I think you are talking apples and oranges, Barney. Most of our members are aware of the horror caused by lack of gun control in the US, to which there seems no stopping. If you had similarly lax laws in Australia, people would also be dying there, because deranged killers are not unique to one country. A terrorist attack is something quite different. No one who lives in NYC, as opposed to Stony Creek, can be accused of parochialism. Kindly remember that Chalkie lives in lower Manhattan, near ground zero, and more or less witnessed the greatest terrorist attack of all time.barney wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2017 8:40 pmObviously a terrible event. Re: ISIS attacks NYC, nobody at CMG bats an eyelid
I did not know where Chalkie lives, and am sorry for suffering endured at 9/11.
But I strongly disagree that no one who lives in New York can be guilty of parochialism. A lot of New Yorkers - I do not accuse Chalkie of this - consider New York the centre of the universe and pay little attention to events outside. Is that not the classic definition of parochialism?
And if gun control is the orange to the apple of terrorism, the NYC attack was with a truck, as we have seen also in Berlin, Paris and London.

Every educated New Yorker knows that worse terrorist attacks than the one that just happened in Manhattan have occurred in Europe. If I were to accuse Americans of parochialism, I would repeat something I recently posted on Facebook, which affects things from gun control to health care. Americans in general don't think anyone but an American ever had a good idea.

To jserraglio.
You distort my comments a great deal, I would never accuse a member here of being a white supremacist, I suggested their lethal attacks have dulled your senses.
To John F.
You called me a Troll? Gosh, I’m hurt...
To jbuck.
You too miss the point. They strike in the us repeatedky at one area in one city, but to me five Brazilian tourists killed in one incident I’d far from acceptable.
To Len.
I speak of what, to me is a serious matter, you respond with tourist snaps, not an opinion.
Mr Seraglio is personally offended, poor baby, my heart weeps for you.

Chalkie you're way off here-I never responded to the terrible events last week with improper tourist photos--at this point I have to say you're not doing too well-it's as bad as the way Kelly treated poor Frederica Wilson-time for you to issue apologies for your incoherent rampage and then maybe we can move on. Well, I for one have to say that I value and admire Chalkperson greatly. I love his photography. He first put me onto Trump's shenanigans. And we are both Dylan fans. So let me be the one to say that I lost my temper (I have a bad one), wrote some hurtful things I should not have and apologize for it. I'll leave it at that.

Re: ISIS attacks NYC, nobody at CMG bats an eyelid
The ISIS-inspired car attack in New York City was horrible.
So is the more recent shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas. And that was Christian-on-Christian crime.
Seems like neither Islam nor Christianity has much claim on being a "religion of peace".
These attacks happen with such regularity you hardly have time to react before another one takes place. Perhaps there should be an "Attack du jour" thread here to allow people to express themselves on the ongoing onslaught.

Black lives matter.

Without wishing to minimise the contribution of Christians to violence, I think you will find the Texas shooter was an atheist. It is reported that he actively preached atheism online.

In fact, before he stopped posting here so often, Rob Baker (and now I've forgotten his screen name, though we are in contact on Facebook) had such a thread. It literally happens every week in the US, so often in fact that much of it escapes the main news. No one is safe.diegobueno wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2017 4:11 pmThe ISIS-inspired car attack in New York City was horrible.
