Salonen Cello Concerto

Well, a recording of the Salonen Cello Concerto is scheduled for release in March according to Presto Classical. This is, in fact, with Yo-Yo Ma as soloist and is on Sony Classical (not Deutsche Grammophon). I do not have full details as of yet; as the duration of the Cello Concerto is about 38 minutes, that would make a very short full-price CD, so I am hoping that there is something else on the CD; the duration of Karawane is 28 minutes, so that would definitely fit. At this point, I do not even know the orchestra. I will definitely get this (it will be my first Yo-Yo Ma CD purchase in probably 15 years or more).

Well, I have more complete information. The orchestra is the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Cello Concerto is the only work on the disc; no Karawane. That makes it rather a short CD, but I will definitely get it. Hopefully, Karawane shows up on another CD with Salonen conducting, most likely on Deutsche Grammophon.

I find I did hear the Salonen Piano Concerto ( 2007 ?) twice, not just once, about 10 years ago. Listened today third time to the DGG debut recording with Yefim Bronfman,Salonen,LA Phil, the PC written for Bronfman with Bronfman’s personality,sound in mind, per the composer in his YT clip with MA I posted earlier. Must admit liked it a little more this 3rd time, after 10 years !! Especially the slow mov. (!). The first and last movs. still mainly rather dense “chatter” to me. Not a purchase , yet. Guess like fine wine, I improve with age ?? Not likely. More tolerant ? "Tolerance" not the accepted “elderly” progression, but more likely , with 10 more years of additional exposure to “ new “ music. Helpful that Salonen is “ tonal”. ( And , helpful there is cheap shiraz here ? )

Leila Josefowicz and the Philharmonia Orchestra, "digitally released 26 May 2014" per the YT, was recorded by DGG with the violinist and composer with Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra released 2012. Again , per the YT notes, written for the violinist. Wonderful work !!!; more listenings needed ; enjoyed much more than his Piano Concerto.

Looking forward to the Cello Concerto.

Impressive on first hearing , not sure whether it will wear for me as well as his Violin Concerto does , but plan more hearings. As with his Violin Concerto, prefer his Cello Concerto to his Piano Concerto. Audience liked the Cello Concerto. The Cello Concerto a bit more introspective, complex, to my ears, than his Violin Concerto.

A Sony cd of this work with Yo Yo Ma , Salonen, LA Phil is to be released March 8 per Presto Classical.
