Goodbye for 3-5 Days
Unfortunately a conservative meds approach to treating a stubborn foot injury has failed and I'm being admitted to a hospital in an hour for 3-5 days for surgery. The operation is no big deal-enforced down time is.
I won't have online access in the hopsital so try to stay calm while I'm gone. Okay?

We'll miss you, Ralph! Good luck and rest up.
In the mean time, it's now time for the rest of us to do some gaining on Ralph as the top poster!

Ralph,
Good luck and tell 'em you're a lawyer. I don't want to hear any "I went to hospital with a sore foot and they extracted my spleen and gave me Hep-C instead" stories. Although I am curious about lack of online access in hospitals. Hope you have a stack of books (or a decent game console) to help you through.

Many of you are my close friends and I feel badly that I had to dissemble. The truth is that last Sunday night an emissary from a VERY IMPORTANT PERSON asked me to secretly fly to Baghdad and take whatever measures were necessary to insure that Saddam Hussein's trial went smoothly and, of course, fairly.
To accommodate my mission Rhode Island Air National Guard One was put at my disposal. I went to Baghdad with results that you've all seen. I may have to return.
I can't say more but as a loyal American the words, "You're doing a heck of a job, Steiny," on my cell phone this morning made me very happy.
Now back to normal posting.

Welcome back Ralph!
Other posters including myself are capable of dissembling, though I never have dissembled (here, at least). I consider Ralph immune from that which would belie honest testimony, and heartily welcome him back to where he is all but indispensible. And oh, by the way, foot surgery is extremely painful and otherwise difficult and we should wish our colleague a good recovery.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I add my sentiments to John. I assume everything went okay with your surgery, Ralph?

So far, so good. I am house-bound for a while which is sheer hell. I will need a second, outpatient operation in several weeks and I'm on IV antibiotics for over a month. A nurse is coming to train me in the morning.

They implanted a catheter in my arm and a nurse is coming tomorrow to teach me how to administer the antibiotic once a day. They're really efficient-all the supplies are being delivered here after 11PM tonight.
The nurse in charge the last two days is a really lovely young woman. I asked her if I could use the catheter for antibiotics for "recreational drug pleasure." She turned red, mumbled and then said, "Sir, I can't answer you."

No, she has a good sense of humor and only needed to "adjust" to me.
