Music of Paul Ben Haim

Post by Rach3 » Sun Sep 16, 2018 3:53 pm

Was introduced to the composer's work at a Rubinstein Competition broadcast years ago as the " Five Pieces" were a required work if I recall. Suite # 1 fun . Required or not, worth hearing as is his Violin Concerto:

Many other works I've yet to hear at YT.

Haim (chaim), as in the late actor Corey Haim who died much too young, is of course Hebrew for "life," no matter how one pronounces it. I've been trying to think about a violin concerto that might not be popularly known here. There aren't very many that are not excellent. Paganini actually wrote beautiful concertos, and this one has the same, to put it politely, magisterial quality in its introduction as the one you posted.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Interesting and about time his work got an airing. My first encounter was his Pastorale Variée for Clarinet, Harp and Strings on a Louisville LP cond: Whitney. I still have it. It led me to explore other works. Two Symphonies are available on the CPO label, his Violin Concerto on ASV. There are other recordings around including IIRC a Concerto for Strings on the MGM label from 1957.

The Pastorale is a work I sometimes turn to for something restful. If it reappeared on a modern recording I'd buy it.

Nice.
