Some 40 years ago I visited Gieseking's daughter snd her family in Germany to see if they had any private recordings that we at Dell'Arte could release. But the family had zilch....

Er.... msthematically 2023 - 2013 = 10, not 13 years

More seriously, I sgree - Cyprien is a seriously underrated pisnist. I persuaded him to give his first UK recital for many years in 2013 at Codsall (near Wolverhampton). And he is a delightfully charming msn.

Very worrying in the UK. Look at these letters to The Times (1) and The Guardian (2) 1. Sir, In the most difficult days of history, the arts — and perhaps especially music — enhanced the spirit. That 1983 Cziffra scherzo is about half the speed and twice the weight of the 1960 one.

I agree - Richter never convinced me in this piece.

I think I have the 1973 RFH ABM performances somewhere...it was not broadcast but I guess someone taped it in the hall. Must dig it out.

I have been listening to a recital by Georges Cziffra from the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées given on 29th January 1960. It is on the Meloclassic label. It opens with Beethoven’s little F Major Sonata Op.54. I’ve long loved this gem of a sonata. It was a favourite of Richter, who played it in one of Ca...

I was at Davies Symphony Hall for his second week of concerts (13th Sept 1995). Ives orchestral songs, Schoenberg’s Survivor from Warsaw and Beethoven 9. It was very much “an occasion” but I am afraid I was unmoved by his Beethoven. The best was the Schoenberg, with Benjamin Luxon.
