Do you happen to know which mastering of the Desormiere is the most listenable? Or are they all pretty much the same? Sound matters to me in this work.

I also like them. The Slavonic Dances, like Brahms Hungarian Dances, were the light music at the time. If we compare their quality to the light music of the present I think we can measure very well what was then meant by Civilization.

There are controversial artists for different reasons.

Example: Harnoncourt is considered a great conductor. The same with Abbado.
