And now I can't edit my own post (again). I had to go to the other board to find a post to tell me to look at my e-mail to get an idea of what the heck is going on.

Wow, I didn't even have to sign in. Must say this has been an experience, what with my children seeing a hacked site repleat with arabic names (probably fake). Thanks for getting this place up and running so fast.

The Webmaster made a few tweaks. Perhaps he added an additional security layer to get into users' profiles.

No, but I got my own edit button back (apparently I was logged in the first time but not the second--here we go again with "the curse of guest").

I would like to say that I feel very bad for Lance and Corlyss who put so much work into this (even though I know it's also fun). It must be a little like having a child come down sick.

Our webmaster spent 4 hours cleaning out the debris and relaunching the site. The fora have been recreated. The member database was unaffected so we administrators were the only ones who had to re-register. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please, carry on as you were . . .

Wrong - I, like Mel, had to reregister. BTW, if this little pussball can do it once he can do it again so what's been done to avoid a repeat?

Wouldn't making everyone register and having no guests posting sort out a miniscule bit with regards to security?

I am new to the board and just wonder if the Administrators allow Guests to post?

Some people take great pleasure in spoiling the enjoyment of the many. Lets hope any new security protocol put in place, provents this happening again.

It was permitted only as long as it took us to reset the permissions for users. Exhausted Webmaster went to bed and left it to Lance and me to do. Guests may look but not touch.

Yes, all gone! Poof! And just when Werner had told me about a review he did for the Reviews forum on Volodos' Schubert. I was about to pay one of my rare visits to the Reviews.

Short answer: no!
Long answer: We have been hacked before but none ever deleted entire fora with posts. There's a first time for everything.

On the matter of backup - of course we have a "button" to push to execute backup. But backup means we backup on our own computers as a download. Last I knew, we had 7.2GB to backup and it rises each day. That's a lot of space on anybody's computer and I cannot delegate that much space to backup. We never had the problem before, but we all have wonderful memories of many posts. Considable work goes into thinking and writing good posts—I mean other than one-liners—and it is not too frequent (I should think, at least) that people go back too many times to gather older information on a board such as this where interchanges are made daily. Hence the reason no backup.

As for reasons why anyone would want to hack a site like this ... I suppose it is for their own, ignorant amusement, with no appreciation for anything that happens here. It's a pretty sick world we live in - rather - there's a lot of sick people in our world and it seems to be getting sicker.

Rescusitating the last months would be a help.

You know that the data is probably still on the hard drives.

To have completely deleted it, the hacker would have had to "Zero" the whole drive (replace/write-over everything on the drive with zeros), which would have taken an enormous amount of time.
