Skrowaczewski Bruckner
Skrowaczewski Bruckner
Has anyone heard any of the Bruckner symphonies from Skrowaczewski and the Saarbruecken Radio Orchestra (Arte Nova/Oehms Classics)? I finally had time to break into the boxed set this weekend, and I can't stop listening to them. This orchestra is excellent. So far 8 and 5 are huge winners for me, and movements of 7 and 3 sounded great.
When I was a young man stationed in Germany a friend and I used to drive down to Saarbruecken all the time. On the border of Germany and France, the nightlife there afforded several options. Little did I know their orchestra was so good!

I have the cycle conducted by Jochum with the Berliner Phil on DG. I stopped listening to them a long time ago due to bordom. Jochum made the symphonies sound way too modern (whereas from Amazon.com, Solti made them sound completely Romantic) and touchy -- the 'feel every note' style. The whole thing was trying to be bigger than it was.
Maybe this box set would be better. I'd be interested in a good Bruckner box because the music definatly sounds promising.

Re: Skrowaczewski Bruckner
I have the 6th which I feel is one of the few really good recordings of this work I've heard.Darryl wrote:Has anyone heard any of the Bruckner symphonies from Skrowaczewski and the Saarbruecken Radio Orchestra (Arte Nova/Oehms Classics)? We've discussed the Arte Nova set a few times here and most of us seem to like it. I do.
I am also a fan of the NAXOS Tintner cycle which makes up in interpretation what it arguably lacks in profound, top tier playing.

So what do you all think of the Bruckner symphonies on Arte Nova by the Japanese conductor? (Sorry, forgot his name. I have some by the Japanese conductor as well as a few by Skrowaczewski).

Music starts where words fail.
It is amazing to pop in symphony after symphony and hear such consistently excellent playing.
The only negative is hardly worth mentioning, but in the Oehms Classics box the CDs are in paper sleeves with glued flaps. This makes little sense even if you manage to get them open in one piece to begin with, so I'd recommend ordering some new sleeves at the same time (I like the Tyvek w/o flap).
