^^ Darren, do you have any decent performances of the Schumann Violin Concerto at all? I know it was quite a flawed piece and therefore rarely recorded...

indeed, I know someone recently released a disk saying 'Violin Concerto' when underneath it said in small letters 'Transcription from Cello Concerto'...

I do remember hearing good things about a Szeryng/Dorati performance, but it had always been cost-prohibitive when I've searched for it online

Disc No. 2 or “Italie” is probably my favourite in this set as I really like this thoughtful music.

You could buy a couple of better Violin Concertos for sixteen quid...the Schumann really is a very average piece of music...

OK folks, I have two small announcements to make...

Firstly, I'm now officially out of here until the end of the week... as I have a Union Conference to attend in Brecon, South Wales... have a good week everyone...

Secondly, I have to declare with deep regret that I am now officially OUT OF SPACE in my CD storage unit...

at one time, I never thought I'd fill it, but the seemingly impossible has happened, and I'm going to have to consider what to do next, given limited storage (I think that small area under the bed might end up being used!..

)

BRAHMS: Symphony n. 1; Haydn Variations / NDR Orchestra, Furtwängler (1951)

I have heard three versions of Furtwängler in this Symphony and this one is the best. In special because of the intense emotion of the Andante Sostenuto and the exceptional cohesion of the 4th movement.
But I still prefer the perfect articulation of Toscanini (with the NBC Orchestra) or the enthusiasm of the mono version recorded by Karajan with the VPO, not forgetting the beautiful recording of Rudolf Kempe with the BPO.

This is the recording to hear today, in St. Cecilia´s Day: both Purcell and Handel´s odes and Haydn´s Cëcilien Messe. The 3 performances are beautiful and expert but not necessarily first choices.
Lucy Crowe stands out among the soloists, and Marc Minkowski and his band are very able jumping from XVII century London to XVIII century Vienna.

Mahler – Two versions of 5 Ruckert-Lieder

1) Baker/Barbirolli
2) Ludwig/von Karajan

The Baker/Barbirolli version has, for me, more refinement and tenderness while the Ludwig/von Karajan versionhas more power and presence. I like both versions very much but the Baker/Barbirolli version is something special indeed!

I love to listen to music played on the cello and I have only recently "discovered" Janos Starker by buying his JS Bach cello suites. I was instantly won over and he is now a cellist that I will consider for all of the works that he performs which interest me

I ´ve heard several of the most significant Marschallins of my time: Söderström, Te Kanawa, Gwyneth Jones, Fleming, etc., but the greatest of all was Anna Tomowa-Sintow. I first heard her in this role in Vienna in 1986, and then in Chicago and Berlin. Te Kanawa was more beautiful and glamorous, but no other Marschallin in my experience lived the role inside-out like her.
Her creamy, generous voice filled every demand put on it, she never had to put any pressure like Söderström, and the words were far more clear and articulated than with Te Kanawa, who on occasion swallowed consonants, often lots of them. Tomowa-Sintow made you care for the Marschallin, and when she gives up the Octavian she´s most affecting. In this 1995 ROH performance she´s untouched by time, the voice absolutely gorgeous, and it is a great pity that the same can not be said of Ann Murray as the Octavian, who under pressure can be shrill. No complaints about Barbara Bonney as Sophie, she is exquisite, and certainly no complaints about the commanding, sonorous Baron Ochs of Kurt Moll, who maybe isn´t as vulgar and lecherous as he should be, but who can complain about such a great voice.
Andrew Davis is an excellent Straussian, and the orchestra plays splendidly for him. The BBC sound has air and presence, it is very well recorded.
All in all, a most enjoyable Rosenkavalier.

I obtained it as I'm a fan of AOF and solo organ. It does not disappoint. This is the only recording I have with Walcha who I have heard is pretty good in most other recordings.

Much the same here, Fergus. I also love the sound of the cello and tried his recordings of the Lalo, Schumann and Saint-Saens Concerti. I was already acquainted with Mercury's "Living Presence" recordings and found the sound quality superb with his artistry overwhelming. That led me to the Bach Suites though I'm no huge Bach fan! He's become my cellist of choice, too.

I've lived with the reel-to-reel recording of that since it was first issued by Ampex, and it's my favorite version of the cello concerto. Mercury sure knew how to make excellent recordings in their day!
