Mozart PC’s: K.467 Robert Casadesus, live 1948 with Munch,NYPO, a concerto Casadesus “ owns” ; Gaby Casadesus 1950 studio recording with Eugene Bigot,Pro Musica, K.453, fine, but not quite up to Robert’s standard ; K.482 and 503 with a young Shai Wosner , live BBC in 2010 with Runnicles,BBCSSO and Manacorda with BBC Phil.,showing great promise, have followed him since.

When one wants to hear some CM, but not sure what, Mozart is always a great default.

Wonderful.

I'm about to open the Casadesus box in a few weeks. Some magnificent listening ahead.

I did not hear the Gershwin, but enjoyed the others, my first hearings of all. Previn’s written in his 80’s for his ex-wife, Anne Sophie Mutter ; Copland’s an early work written when he was in his 20’s in Paris ;Schemmer’s movement written for his just then born son.

Aleksey Semenenko violin
Artem Belogurov piano

Andre Previn
Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano

Tony Schemmer
Sonata for violin and piano, Mov. II. Sandor's Ballad ( 1981 )

Aaron Copland
2 Pieces for violin and piano

George Gershwin
Porgy and Bess Suite (transcribed by Jascha Heifetz)

Rudolf Serkin - Brahms 2 Szell-CO 1966 Columbia - digitized from R2R tape.
Great performance but in disappointing sound, this time in a good remastering.

There was a time, Joe, when I had more of those reel-to-reel tapes than I could count! I loved the fact that not only did they not have snap, crackle and pop as an underlying chorus, but if one had the good sense to attach a short length of foil tape at the end of side one, on certain machines the reels would reverse direction and play side B without human intervention!

My collection included many from Columbia House, but when Dolby B was invented, there were European issues along with those from Barclay-Crocker, made right here in Manhattan so I could ride the subway down to Wall Street and hobnob with the genial engineer, Harold, who would pass me a few free samples to check on my system with a Phase Linear Autocorrelator to see if I could hear any tape hiss at all!

Those were the days!

A new work and new Welsh composer for me, the Williams VC will warrant at least another hearing, but perhaps not a recording purchase , the work darker, more complex than this BBC Radio 3 program note suggests, wanders a bit :

"Grace Williams' Violin Concerto is an exceptionally lyrical piece, whose central movement is built around the Welsh hymn tune Hen Ddarbi (Old Proverb) . “

Grace Williams is reported to have studied with Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose influence can be heard I think.I did not hear the other 2 works on the broadcast.

Britten: Prelude and Fugue
Williams: Violin Concerto (1950 )
Vaughan Williams: Symphony No 5

Madeleine Mitchell (violin) , BBC National Orchestra of Wales , Jamie Phillips (conductor)
Recorded live in Hoddinott Hall,Cardiff, on 3rd November,2021.

This stunning just released CD with Magdalena Kozena and pianist Yefim Bronfman features songs by Bartok, Mussorgsky and Brahms, all sounding like they were written for her. Available on Spotify.

Bax wrote very fine music IMHO. I've had those Lyrita recordings since they came out on LP, later buying them on CD, and acquired the Chandos set many years ago when that one was issued also.

Bax was even more effective with his tone poems IMHO, and Chandos has issued a series of 9CDs under the rubric "Bax Orchestral Works," including Volume VIII which has his choral and vocal works on it. Just wonderful and I think vastly underappreciated music outside the British Isles.

Pianist George Wu Teng plays Medtner’s epic “Night Wind “ Sonata live in Montreal, May,2021 ( without score !) :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2o85UJ65BI

Reminds me more of the approach of Geoffrey Tozer ( my recording) , than benchmarks Mejoueva,Hamelin,Milne, but Weng “better” technically than Tozer if Teng perhaps a bit too “ notey “ ? For some reason, this Sonata is probably my least favorite of all Medtner’s piano sonatas.

And here, live in a studio, 2016, Liszt’s “Norma” : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjVo2dmSOFc

A new pianist for me.

Saint-Saens Symphony # 2, Jean Martinon, ORTF National Orchestra, EMI cd, my first hearing on recommendation of a Welsh friend.Enjoyed more than the composer’s Symphony # 3 , although neither will be regular listening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Mj7PyZ1hzE

Discovered Debussy liked # 2 well enough Debussy did a transcription for 2- pianos of the final 2 movements.

Big symphony day today, Robert Schumann’s 2nd and 3rd, Brahms’ 4th, Bruckner’s 7th, all live radio broadcasts, finishing with the S-S cd. Back to a fix of piano music.

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet live in London, Sept.,2021.

A magical Haydn sonata, my first hearing, one of the few Haydn sonatas I’d seek out to hear again. The Clementi is quite virtuosic, again a first hearing for me , but while I usually adore Clementi sonatas, musically not this one. The Liszt I suspect is rarely heard and much better music than the title of the work would suggest. Absolutely first - rate playing by one of the great pianists of our day.

Joseph Haydn
Piano Sonata No.31 in A flat major,Hob. XVI/46

Muzio Clementi
Sonata In A Major,Op.50, # 1

Franz Liszt
“ Grosses Konzertsolo “ - concerto pathetique S.176

Interesting ,rather stark, Ravel work I suspect not heard often, my first hearing I believe,From the BBC:

“ Petroc Trelawny introduces music by Fauré and his students from the Paris Conservatoire, performed by members of Caerus Chamber Ensemble in the scenic setting of St. Mawes Methodist Chapel in Cornwall.

Held annually over a weekend in November, in one of the most picturesque parts of England, Music at Tresanton is the brainchild of artistic director and pianist Noam Greenberg. This year the international cast of musicians' focus falls on one of France's most influential figures, Gabriel Fauré and the younger generations who followed in his footsteps, among them George Enescu and most famously, Maurice Ravel.”

Ravel: Sonata for violin and cello ( 1920 -22 )
Jonian Ilias Kadesha, violin
Vashi Mimosa Hunter, cello

Enescu: Homage sur le nom de Fauré for piano
Noam Greenberg, piano

Fauré: Piano quartet No 1 in C minor, Op 15
Noam Greenberg, piano
Jonian Ilias Kadesha, violin
Clare Finnimore, viola
Vashti Mimosa Hunter, cello

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011rwl

Fww, enjoyed the Ravel more on second hearing.Actually may prefer it to his ubiquitous 2nd Violin Sonata ( “ Blues” ).

Love it. One of my favorite operas done with period instruments.
An orchestra player on another forum wrote:I was in the hall. Being not a Wagnerian i will not dare to comment on the vocal aspects. From orchestral point of view only, this performance is already remarkable. It is played by the enlarged baroque ensemble Concerto Köln (no kidding). An enormous amount of research and preparation has been done into 19th century practices which is well illuminated in the pdf (in Dutch). The result is stunning. A transparancy that is unheard. Unheard because it also goes with a more warm sound (no metal winds, gut strings). The dynamic range is extremely well handled by Nagano.
Wagner, Das Rheingold

Ania Vegry, soprano (Woglinde)
Sarah Wegener, soprano (Freia)
Ida Aldrian, mezzo-soprano (Wellgunde)
Stefanie Irányi, mezzo-soprano (Fricka)
Gerhild Romberger, mezzo-soprano (Erda)
Eva Vogel, mezzo-soprano (Floßhilde)
Tansel Akzeybek, tenor (Froh)
Thomas Ebenstein, tenor (Mime)
Thomas Mohr, tenor (Loge)
Johannes Kammler, baritone (Donner)
Daniel Schmutzhard, baritone (Alberich)
Derek Welton, bass-baritone (Wotan)
Tijl Faveyts, bass (Fasolt)
Christoph Seidl, bass (Fafner)

Joe, this was simply wonderful. Everyone in the cast was having a great night. Joyce DiDonato and Michael Spyres sounded magnificent as always, and the other less known singers sounded inspired by their examples. Energetic and supple conducting certainly brought out the best from the Pomo d'Oro players.

A real gem. I will definitely find time to hear this again before it goes away.

Thanks for a lovely morning!

Still one of the greats today. Here “Valses nobles et sentimentale”, “Miroirs” , “Tombeau” from an MHS recording. YT ads , but worth the irritation.

Came back from the eye doctor yesterday afternoon. With my pupils dilated, I couldn't read, use the computer or watch TV. So I listened to this CD--one of the greatest works in the piano literature, performed by (IMHO) the greatest Beethoven pianist of them all.

Rudolf Serkin played Beethoven Emperor and the Fourth Concerto in Philadelphia

For the Diabellis, nowadays I find myself playing Sokolov.

I have some of Schnabel's chamber music on an old CD. It's quite nice, but unremarkable. I'll check this out tomorrow. Thanks!

Be forewarned , the Schnabel Piano Sonata is a bit of a tough nut, but after several years of listening , the work has grown on me. Perhaps I’m getting more tolerant in my dotage.
The work "improves" as it proceeds.

Malcuzynski was a magical Chopin interpreter, thanks! I have his EMI Icon box from a while back, and, yes, he is at his best in Chopin. Will hear this recital later today. :D

He also recorded a fine Rach3 with Paul Kletzki, issued here on a Columbia LP. Spotify has it coupled with a Chopin II, also with Kletzki, along with four other titles.

That excellent Brahms I is in the Icon box as well.

Other personal favorites would be: Rubinstein (1954/Reiner), Van Cliburn, Peter Serkin/Atlanta/Shaw, Hamelin/Dallas/Litton.
