Tchaikovsky Gotta Admit

Post by lennygoran » Tue Dec 18, 2018 9:39 am

Someone had mentioned a CMM Classical Music Forum--I think John F-- and I guess when I went to look at it they wanted my email-anyway this morning an email from them mentioned Tchaikovsky's 7th symphony-this was news to me-went to wiki where it and a Piano Concerto No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 75 of his were talked about-don't have these works and never heard of or even heard either work-fortunately there's youtube! Regards, Len :)

Gary Graffman recorded all three Tchaikovsky piano concerti.

I have two recordings of the Tchaikovsky/Bogatyryev. I prefer the Ormandy and have had the lp since it came out decades ago.

Thanks I listened to the piano concerto yesterday and took to it right away-the 7th symphony not so much but I'll try again later today. Regards, Len

Somehow the piano concerto 2 wasn't ringing a bell-I went to youtube and as soon as it came on I realized I didn't know this concerto either-I'll play it later-the beginning sounded wonderful-right up my alley! :D

The so-called 7th symphony is poor stuff - Tchaikovsky was right to abandon it. I see in the Wikipedia article that there's been another completion, which isn't likely to be any better. The Pathetique is a spectacular rebound from this low point, so we really don't need a symphony no. 5½.

That's too bad-so it was too good to be true-here I was hoping for another great symphony from him-I love the 6 he did. Regards, Len

Ormandy also recorded the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerti with Gary Graffman and they've been released on a 2-disc set pictured below, along with Moussorgsky's Pictures and Balakirev's Islamey in fine performances, despite a cut in the slow movement of Concerto II:
