Ida Haendel 1928-2020

Luminary Polish-born English violinist and teacher Ida Haendel has passed away, in Miami – aged 91.

A student of Carl Flesch and George Enescu, Ms Haendel will be remembered as one of the preeminent violinists of the 20th Century.

A recognised child prodigy, she was awarded 7th prize in the 1935 Wieniawski International Violin Competition – aged just 7.

The sound on the S-S is not good, but worth hearing, certainly on a par with my Francescatti and Rabin recordings of the S-S # 3, one of my fav VC's. I dont know if Heifetz played,recorded S-S # 3,but Haendel's playing here reminded me a bit of Heifetz' manner.

Very sorry to learn this as well. Fortunately, I have many of her recordings, EMI, Testament, British Decca, ABC Australia, Doremi (many), Dutton, Hanssler, Membran, Pearl, Supraphon, Tahra and VAI. Between labels, there is some duplication or better restoration. She was quite the lady in her prime!

As the Sibelius VC is my fav VC, and she would presumably have still been in top form at age 56 , did also listen to this Feb. ,1980 live in Rotterdam with Rotterdam Phil under David Zinman.Much more leisurely and broadly romantic than the Heifetz-Beecham recording ( and perhaps a few misses here, but live ),which H-B I still prefer, but hers very worth hearing,especially given the information in jserraglio's helpful post here : " She was awarded the Sibelius Prize in 1982, and apparently earlier received this note from Sibelius: “I congratulate you on the great success, but most of all I congratulate myself, that my concerto has found an interpreter of your rare standard.”

When I learned of her passing, the EMI recording of the Sibelius Concerto with Berglund was the first of her recordings to come to mind. I was captivated by it nearly 40 years ago and bought it the next day. Re-listening, I was captivated again and will re-visit some other recordings over time as well.

Since we're speaking of re-issues today, I just thought to bring this recent Decca box of Ida Haendel's recordings (mentioned earlier) to everyone's attention. Presto is currently offering it at about $10 less than amazon's total cost. It's included in my order from them for December.

Yes, I eagerly await this one as well. Unless one uses FexEx on Presto orders, it can be a long time coming. Another local collector and I pool our orders so we can automatically get the FedEx. Awaiting a rather large order from them ... should be here in a few days. Not only a fine violinist, but a great dresser as well was Miss Haendel!

Yes, Lance, that's true about Presto's orders taking a long time to arrive, particularly during the holidays. In fact, I don't expect my December order to arrive until some time in January, but it's worth the wait for the savings involved.
