Anybody who loves the hugely virtuosic flute music of Hungarians Franz and Karl Doppler undoubtedly acquired all of the 12 CDs of the Doppler Brothers' (apparently) complete flute music on the Capriccio label. That was a stupendous project, but I somehow think it wasn't quite complete. The Dopplers are fairly well represented on CDs. Beyond those on Capriccio, is one issued on the Swiss label Tudor [7174] featuring Walter Auer and Karl-Heinz Schütz, both solo flutists with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Three of the works thereon were written jointly by Franz and Karl while just Franz wrote four of the selections. During their lifetimes [Franz 1821-1883 and Karl 1825-1900] they brought to the flute what Liszt did for the piano. They were both highly popular as performers and now leave their mark as composers. The works are tuneful in every sense and a pleasure to hear. The Souvenir de Prague, Op. 24 composed by both Dopplers, it becomes a memorable travel souvenir. When the brothers heard renowned soprano Adelina Patti perform Bellini's opera, La Sonnambula, Franz created a Paraphrase and Souvenir of Adelina Patti. Indeed, the flutes sing here!
Neither Doppler ever visited America, however, Franz created his Duettino on American Motifs, Op. 37, which embraces Hail Columbia, the Star-Spangled Banner, including themes as Boatman Dance, and Yankee Doodle! So, American music was getting around in those early days. Besides, who would not like Yankee Doodle?
This is a superlative recording if you are only going to have one by the Doppler Brothers. The flutists blend together with perfection and are assisted by an outstanding pianist, Christoph Traxler, who also has a few opportunities to show off his expertise at the keyboard. Highly recommended! ♫
