Deborah Borda to Leave New York Philharmonic

Post by Modernistfan » Fri Jun 17, 2022 11:52 am

In what was unexpected news, Deborah Borda has decided to step down as President and CEO of the New York Philharmonic in 2023; she will then become executive advisor to the President and Board of Directors. The new President and CEO will be Gary Ginstling, presently holding a similar position at the National Symphony Orchestra in the District of Columbia.

This leads to the question of who will replace Jaap van Zweden as music director in New York. Borda's departure means that Salonen and Dudamel are probably off the table (in any event, Salonen would be unlikely to leave San Francisco and taking the overhyped, inconsistent Dudamel off the table would probably be a good thing for New York anyway.) The real tragedy is that the board will probably look for the safest, dullest European white male conductor available, and, for example, Mälkki will not get a shot.
