Sofronitsky, indeed a remarkable pianist, died too young. I have several Russian/Ukrainian-born friends residing around these parts, who were professional performing pianists who hold Sofronitsky to a god-like status. He seems to be most associated with the music of Scriabin. Seems to me I recall that he married into that family or some such thing.

People looking for his recordings would do well to seek out the Melodiyas [too many to list], the 34-CD set on Scribendum [817], which gives a remarkable overview, or the 10-CD set on Brilliant Classics [8975], the latter of which I believe is OOP like many of the Russian pianist Brilliant sets. Other excellent recordings appear on the Vista Vera label [00024, 00031, 00091]. He also appears on many other labels.

When she started to play, Mr. Steinway came down and personally
rubbed his name off the piano. [Speaking about pianist &*$#@+#]

He married Scriabin’s eldest daughter, after the composer’s death.
