What do CMGers think of baritone Wolfgang Holzmair?

Post by Lance » Thu Feb 29, 2024 11:16 pm

Wolfgang Holzmair (b. 1951): Here's a Austrian baritone with a "tenor-ish" voice singing many of the great songs and cycles by the great composers ... Schumann, Beethoven, Schubert, etc. There is an excellent 13-CD set of all his Philips recitals now on Decca Eloquence [484 4474], which contains quite a bit of French music as well, and some "Hollywood," but no opera. I am preparing a radio tribute to him on one of my Saturday broadcasts.

One learns a lot about the artist and reads comments about Holzmair's "competitors," namely Fischer-Dieskau and Prey, both of whom he admired, [in the accompanying booklet] and was, too, a great fan of Christa Ludwig. Many singers, some prominent, I talk to are unaware of his voice and art ... a wonderful reason to see these recitals released on Eloquence. He recorded for American Bridge records and a couple other labels and even lent his voice to some opera (on disc) but mostly on stage. I would loved to have had a recital or two of his operatic work (there is some Haydn on Capriccio).
