Feinberg is a rather obscure (lesser known) as opposed to underrated pianist. Much of this is probably because he was Russian and much of his performance career was while Stalin was the Russian leader and reluctant to let many artists perform outside of the border.
My introduction to Feinberg was his recording of the WTC and it's one of my three go to versions of this seminal work. There is also quite a lot on YT.

Amazing pianist. His Scriabin Sonata No.5 and LvB " Appassionata" on the Arbiter cd's not to be missed ; at YT as well.Hamelin has recorded Feinberg's own Sonatas Nos.1-6, and there are 2 BIS cd's covering all 12, fascinating music. As Holden notes, one can perhaps hear changes in style from the pre-Stalin Nos. 1-7 , and the Stalin and post - Stalin 8-12.

I thought I'd heard most of the significant Appassionatas but this had escaped me until now. The speed reminds me of my favourite versions by Gilels (1959) and Richter (1960). Maybe this is a Russian approach to this sonata. I really like what Feinberg does with the whole work.

FWW: Spotify has Feinberg's WTC available complete.Holden Fourth wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 4:13 pmFeinberg is a rather obscure (lesser known) as opposed to underrated pianist. Re: Samuel Feinberg plays Schumann "Album for the Young" Op.68
I have a number of Feinberg's recordings, including the complete WTC and the Arbiter. But the SCHUMANN shown on the original post was of special interest to me. I see ARCHIPEL has a two-CD set for download only of four selections of Schumann's music (including Album for the Young), something I must have. I note that much of what Archipel is releasing these days is ONLY for download. If that's the case, it is a great pity. I was going to write to Archipel but could not find any specific location or email address. Anybody have any information on this?
