VIDEO: Lucia Popp Sings Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs (Solti/Chicago)
Re: VIDEO: Lucia Popp Sings Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs (Solti/Chicago)
Agree. I have a CD of Popp singing these with Klaus Tennstedt on the podium. Hers wasn't a big voice like Jessye Norman.
What a tragedy Lucia Popp died in her mid 50s of a brain tumour. A great loss.

Indeed, a pity to lose Lucia Popp so young and gone now for more than three decades. Hardly seems possible. Fortunately, she left us a huge discography of solo recordings; she also appears on many recordings in opera, oratorio, etc. and on many labels, the best being on EMI, Sony, RCA. Her EMI/Icon set [98515, 7 CDs] is a treasure trove. Another death tragedy with a brain tumor in the manner of the late Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

Indeed, this was a major loss as well. Even to this day, Hvorostovsky has a tremendous following online with all kinds of info and, of course, all those recordings, Philips and Delos. His presence is sorely missed in the world of music.

I loved that Four Last Songs. I spent a chunk of yesterday on that website listening to more Lucia Popp and then more, Schuert and various Strausses.
(In the evening I changed milieu and went to a riveting MSO concert of American classics: School for Scandal overture, Westside Story Symphonic Dances, An American in Paris, plus a new trombone concerto by former jazz pianist and composer turned classical composer Joe Chindiamo.)
