Luciano Berio - as an "arranger"

Post by Lance » Tue Apr 30, 2024 5:47 pm

I have never been a fan of Luciano Berio's [1925-2003] original music. But I am discovering him as an arranger in "folk songs" and four selections from Mahler's Knaben Wunderhorn plus another song he arranged. All of this is included in Supraphon CD [3264] 11 folksongs from various countries (including the US: "I Wonder as I Wander"), 23'30" of music that was enormously wonderful to hear. There is more non-Berio Mahler, namely four more songs from Knaben Wunderhorn. Everything is heard with the wonderful Czech mezzo-soprano, Dagmar Pecková and the Prague Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra under Jiri Belohlavek's direction. The recordings were origanlly made in 1996. Incidentally, Berio's first wife was the American soprano Cathy Berberian [1925-1983], but she has potential for another thread!

Berio also orchestrated Brahms' 1st clarinet sonata, making it in effect a clarinet concerto. In the process he added a 30 second orchestral introduction of his own composition.

Black lives matter.

Now, that is something I would like to hear! Has it been recorded as a concerto?
