The share of Virginia’s early elementary students at high-risk for reading failure increased by more than 50 percent this fall, with the biggest increase seen among children who are Black, Latino, or poor. Children’s mental health visits to emergency rooms also grew by at least a quarter, as did family food insecurity. Most frightening: More time at home, and in the home, has given millions of children greater exposure to lead, which can have adverse effects on brain development and behavior.
