What are the "must-have" films of Ingrid Bergman?

Autumn Sonata (1978), directed by Ingmar Bergman - Ingrid Bergman's last movie. The cast also includes Liv Ullman, Gunnar Björnstrand, and Erland Josephson. Ingrid Bergman portrays a concert pianist, Liv Ullman her daughter. Not light entertainment, but a wonderful film. And you hear la Bergman speaking her native language.

I'll tell you one to avoid--Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, in which she is laughably miscast.

I thought her late performance as Golda Meir was as good as anything she ever did.

I also enjoyed some of her lighter work, like The Bells of St. Mary's and Cactus Flower. It was a pleasure watching her among the superb ensemble cast of Murder On The Orient Express .

An aside ... her daughter Isabella Rossellini was in a wonderful 1998 film called "Left Luggage" (well worth seeing) ... she wore a head covering, and I gasped ... it was like looking at her mother's beautiful face.

When I was living in Sweden I saw some quite interesting films at a film festival. One of them was Branningar, which came out in 1935. Ingrid Bergman plays the part of a young girl living on an island. During a violent storm with the passionate music of Tchaikowsky playing in the background, a visiting priest succumbs to temptation. Overcome with remorse, he runs out into the night, grasps a flagpole and is struck by lighting. This causes him to lose his memory. A few years later he revisits the island and wonders who is the father of the girl's illegitimate child. Bergman gives him a wonderful, incredulous look at that point. I wouldn't rate this as indispensable Bergman, but it did give a fascinating glimpse of the twenty year old actress.

It has to 'Casablanca' above all others. What a wonderful and beautiful actress. Bergman was one of a kind!

Ingrid Bergman's autobiography, Ingrid Bergman: My Story by Ingrid Bergman and Alan Burgess, published by Delacorte Press in New York in 1980 arrived a few days ago. I was able to find a great used copy. Leafing through, it looks like a great read.

Me too, although IMO somehow Colleen Dewhurst was more believable as Meir. Notorious and Gaslight are also must haves.
