Wild Strawberries (Bergman) 1957

A beautiful Criterion restoration of this enigmatic Bergman film from 1957. The central character is played by Victor Sjöström - who directed "Under the Red Robe" (1937), inter alia - an Anglo American film shot in the UK, which I've posted here. (That film is in dire need of restoration.)

I studied "Wild Strawberries" back in the 1980s as part of my undergraduate degree but I've enjoyed it much more seeing it again recently than I did back then.

The avuncular Professor seems more endearing to me now and his character saves the film from being an ascetic surrealist experiment!! I don't enjoy Bergman's films, thinking them dour and self-indulgent, but I quite liked this one.

Here is director and star during the making of "Wild Strawberries".
