Polio: An American Story by David Oshinsky (2005)

Just started it. Looks to be a fascinating study of how this epidemic affected American society of the 1950s. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History.

Another thing, the book shows by contrast the lack of solidarity in America of the Covid pandemic, when compared to our nation during the polio epidemic.

I remember those polio-scare summers only too well: being confined indoors by Mother, filling up March of Dimes cards, seeing my strapping next-door neighbor drop out of sight, then suddenly reappear in a wheelchair wearing leg braces.
